Switching to Non-Toxic Products

As some of you may know we are kicking off our 14 day detox program this Saturday! So, why not talk about some non-toxic household products? First, why would you want to switch to Non-Toxic products for the house? Well, just like unhealthy and toxic food, your liver has to work hard to break down these products and excrete the toxins, if your body hasn’t already stored them. Skin (your body’s largest organ), has its own protective barrier. However, without going into too much detail, if products are mixed with “essential oils” (oil mixed with alcohol) they will likely be able to cross that protective barrier. If there are synthetic fragrances and preservatives, they will cross the barrier easily, then, end up in your bloodstream. These chemicals can also affect our hormones and other organ systems. So, I know it can be overwhelming, but the key is to start with a few products at a time and do your research. Below I have listed some of the first things you may want to look at switching, the main toxins that can be found in each product and some of my personal recommendations.

Bath and Body Products

Toothpaste

  • Fluoride Free- Children 8 and under tend to accidentally swallow toothpaste and end up with Fluorosis. Fluorosis is damage to the enamel that is permanent and can lead to erosion. Not to mention, when swallowed it can lead to toxicity in the body, for adults and children. Fluoride is linked to numerous other health conditions, which is why we also recommend fluoride free water.
  • Xylitol- it actually helps re-mineralize the teeth because xylitol does not produce acid like sugar, it does stimulate saliva, which increases the pH and prevents demineralization.
  • Recommended Product- XyliFresh Toothpaste

(If you need to chew gum, you should think about switching to Spry gum, which also has xylitol in it!)

Body Wash/Soap/Shampoo

  • No retinyl palmitate- it is a form of Vitamin A that may actually speed the development of skin tumors and lesions.
  • No Fragrances: can contain hormone disruptors and are among the top 5 allergens in the world.
  • Avoid SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulfate) or anything that ends in “LS” basically- It is a foaming agent used in Soaps, detergents, Shampoos, even toothpaste, anything that foams up. When processed it is contaminated with a carcinogenic by product.
  • Recommended Product: Everyday Coconut or Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap for body wash. Botanique by Himalaya for Shampoo, Conditioner and Face wash

Body Lotion

  • Again avoid fragrances as mentioned above.
  • Avoid Quaternium-15 because it releases formaldehyde.
  • Avoid Propylene Glycol- it is a neurotoxin and known to cause contact dermatitis, even in the smallest quantities.
  • Recommended Product: Make your own, it’s pretty easy! Click here for my Preservative & Chemical free lotion recipe!  If you don’t want to make your own, choose something simple like food grade liquid coconut oil or almond oil.

Deodorant/Antiperspirant

  • This one is very important for women because of the proximity to the breast tissue. If you shave your underarms, get a cut, then put on a toxic antiperspirant, those toxins can easily make their way to breast tissue.
  • Avoid Aluminum! Studies have shown the presence of aluminum in breast cancer tumors and breast tissue.  It is also know to interfere with estrogen itself.
  • Recommended Product: Crystal Body Deodorant Stick

Sunscreen

  • SPF should always be less than 50 (and that’s for intense sun exposure). Anything higher blocks only 1% more of the sunburn rays.
  • No retinyl palmitate- it is a form of Vitamin A that may actually speed the development of skin tumors and lesions.
  • Use lotions instead of sprays and powders to avoid inhaling it.
  • Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide- these should be the active ingredients, because they are the best options since they do not penetrate the skin and are more stable when exposed to the sun.
  • Make sure kids get hats and lots of shade, the best natural sun protection.
  • Recommended Product: Jason Pure Natural Mineral Sunscreen

Home Products

Household Cleaning Products

  • Avoid SLS as mentioned above
  • Avoid Fragrances as mentioned above
  • Avoid Ethoxylates/Petroleum based cleaners- poses threat to marine life and linked to cancer and sterility.
  • Look for plant based cleaners
  • Recommended Product: Anything from the company Better Life- We have used their wood floor cleaner, all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner and hand soaps. All are fantastic and you can read a review of each product on our blog.  Products are so safe you can eat/drink them- I don’t recommend it though! They also make dish soaps, laundry detergent and baby products. To read my full Better Life Cleaning Products Review click here.

Laundry Detergent

  • Avoid SLS and Fragrances as mentioned above
  • U.S. Law allows the makers of cleaning products to put almost any ingredient they want to in their products, including carcinogens.
  • Laundry products make about 10% of the population feel ill.
  • Recommended Product: Better Life or Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap

Where to buy these products or similar ones:

  • Fruitful Yield
  • Amazon
  • Whole Foods
  • CVS/Walgreens
  • Trader Joe’s
  • For Better Life Cleaning Products: www.cleanhappens.com and you can use these codes for some discounts: NoRegrets25 for 25% off their hand soap and Save10 for 10$ off 100$

If you are unsure if a product is safe, use the consumer guides on the Environmental Working Group website: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/

And remember start small, pick a few of the most important products to shop for, and look around for the best price you can get. Look at the ingredients list, if its overwhelming and has many ingredients you’ve never heard of put it back. The ingredients list should be short and should be made up of mostly plants. As you get comfortable move onto another handful of products.

Look out for a video review of each product, what we like about them and what we didn’t like about other products we’ve tried.

Note: The recommended products are simply our preference based on the ingredients, scent and effectiveness of the product. We are not paid by the companies, nor do we receive free products from them.
